The Association of Translation Companies' annual conference will take place on Tuesday, 2nd November 2004 at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. The theme will be 'Getting in Shape for the Future'.

The environment for the profession is changing rapidly. Developments in technology are not only enabling translation companies and freelancers to work more efficiently, they are raising the expectations of customers too. They've always thought that translations could be delivered yesterday. Now they expect it, as well as having it all at a cheaper price too!

In the meantime, moves to drive up professional standards are gaining momentum on all fronts. Work on the CEN Quality Standard for translation providers is moving into the critical public consultation phase and, in the UK, a bid for a Royal Charter has been submitted by the Institute of Linguists. All this is happening against the growth of global on-line providers. They are offering round-the-clock service at prices that sometimes seem unbelievable. Speed and price are good for the customer, but will quality be the price?
